Internet use in Kenya by county

Nairobi has the highest internet use in Kenya, with 64.7% of people online. West Pokot has the lowest at 9.1%. The top county is 7.1 times the bottom one. Only 15 of 47 counties reach the 35% national figure I use on the map.

Counties with the highest internet use

Nairobi (64.7%), Kiambu (54.0%), Nyeri (50.1%), Mombasa (46.9%), Uasin Gishu (42.1%) and Nyandarua (41.6%) make up the top six. Every other county sits below 41.6%. The median county is at 30.3%, so the leaders pull well clear of the pack.

Counties with the lowest internet use

West Pokot (9.1%), Turkana (12.7%), Tana River (15.5%), Marsabit (16.3%), Garissa (16.5%) and Vihiga (18.3%) sit at the bottom. In West Pokot fewer than one person in ten uses the internet.

Internet use against electricity access

Internet use and power access usually move together, but not always. Taita Taveta, which ranks 9th on internet use and 28th on electricity, Kilifi, which ranks 22nd on internet use and 36th on electricity and Isiolo, which ranks 19th on internet use and 31st on electricity. Those counties use the internet more than their power access would suggest. The electricity access post covers the other side of the pair.

What the numbers measure

The figures come from the 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey, published through KNBS. They count individuals who use the internet, not households with a connection. A survey samples people, so each county figure carries a margin of error. I use it because it is the most recent county level source I can find.
